West Houston Chinese Church (WHCC) is a nondenominational church that is committed to the vision of “Welcoming sojourners home to the joy of following Jesus together.” WHCC is seeking a full-time Mandarin Chinese pastor for our Mandarin-speaking adult congregation. WHCC’s Mandarin Congregation is a vibrant, inclusive community consisting of Mandarin-speaking adults of all ages. Our congregation currently has an average worship attendance of about 500 adults, with more than 30 small groups meeting throughout greater Houston. Qualifications
  • Language Skills: Mandarin Chinese preaching & English speaking and writing. Other dialects or languages a plus.
  • Education: Graduate level seminary training, M.Div. or above preferred.
  • Experience: An ordained pastor with ministry experience to the Chinese required. North American pastoral experience for at least three years is required.
  • Ministry Style: Must be a team player who is comfortable functioning within a multiple language-staff structure.
  • Spiritual Gifts: Preaching, teaching and leadership.
  • Doctrine: Non-charismatic evangelical; must be in full agreement with WHCC’s statement of faith

Responsibilities 

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction in the assigned areas of Chinese ministry in accordance with the church vision
  • Disciple and mentor ministry leaders
  • Coach a team of small group leaders and apprentices in the assigned ministry zone
  • Function effectively and smoothly as a member of the staff team


Teaching & Preaching

  • Preach in the Mandarin Chinese service
  • Teach adult Sunday School classes
  • Conduct ministry trainings


Care Ministry

  • Provide care and shepherding to the Mandarin congregation
  • Conduct visitations as needed
  • Minister to families and singles in small groups and the church


Missions & Evangelism

  • Model and train others in evangelism
  • Support the church’s global ministries and evangelistic efforts


Administration

  • Report to the Mandarin Chinese Lead Pastor
  • Attend bi-monthly church council meetings and bi-monthly Mandarin lead team meetings
  • Share administrative duties assigned within the staff team
  • Attend weekly staff meetings

The associate English Pastor/Minister’s primary role is to assist the English Pastor in leading and shepherding WHCC’s English-speaking congregation in becoming a mature, caring and missional community of God-inspired change that lives out WHCC’s mission and vision.

Qualifications
  • Must be in full agreement with WHCC’s doctrinal statement of faith
  • Graduate level seminary training (MA/MDiv/ThM or equivalent)
  • Experienced in working with young adults
  • Has a creative, missional ministry mindset
  • Conduct effective ministry trainings
  • Be committed to a small group ministry philosophy.  
  • Must be a people person with strong interpersonal and communication skills and a team player who is comfortable functioning within the multi-staff, multilingual/cultural ethnic church environment.  
  • Experience in Asian-American ministry strongly preferred 
  • Gifting in leading worship teams would be a plus
  • Effective administration skills preferred.

Responsibilities 

The English Minister will operate in these key areas:

Leadership

  • Assist lead English pastor in the leadership and direction in the English ministry consistent with the overarching vision and direction of WHCC.
  • Shepherd, develop, and coach associated English ministry deacons and potential deacons
  • Support the Meta Ministry team and pastoral staff by managing and executing ministry plans, events, and administrative matters with the help of office staff.
  • Support the planning and execution of the worship team for the weekly Sunday service working with the worship deacon.
  • Advance intergenerational ministry through collaboration with various ministries (e.g. family, kids, youth) to put on summer intergen services and annual events.


Teaching & Preaching

  • Serve on the preaching team in rotation with other pastoral staff
  • Preach biblically and relevantly in the English service
  • Provide effective teaching and training through Pathways on a regular basis


Shepherding & Pastoral Counseling

  • Help in organizing pastoral care and shepherding for the congregation through the small group ministry
  • Conduct individual, family, and pre-marital counseling or refer church members to professional counseling as needed.
  • Initiate and coordinate shepherding & equipping for college students during the summer.


Missions & Evangelism

  • Model a joy and passion for personal evangelism and missions.
  • Create opportunities for families with school-aged children to support and participate in the mission and evangelism effort of WHCC both in Houston and around the world.
  • Oversee local outreach events working with the community care deacon, including but not limited to the future of sports ministry.


Miscellaneous

  • Demonstrate an example of servant leadership with a grace-oriented, yet faithful and accountable attitude.
  • Engage in effective personal ministry inside and outside the church as needed, e.g. teaching, performing weddings, funerals, baptisms, communion, etc., and other pastoral or administrative duties as assigned by the Lead English Pastor.

The youth pastor/minister’s primary role is to shepherd the middle and high school students at West Houston Chinese Church in partnership with parents, the WHCC congregation, and pastors to create resilient disciples in Christ Jesus.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Experienced in working with middle and high school students
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be a team player who is comfortable functioning within a multi-staff, multilingual and multicultural ethnic church environment


Preferred Skills

  • Graduate level seminary training (MA/MDiv/ThM or equivalent) strongly preferred
  • Experience in Asian-American ministry strongly preferred
  • Effective administration skills

Responsibilities 

Teaching & Preaching

  • Disciple students using a Biblical worldview in contrast to the dominant cultural view
  • Oversee teaching and curriculum for Sunday morning D-groups (discipleship groups)
  • Plan and oversee weekly Friday night Ignite youth gatherings
  • Equip students and leaders in discipleship
  • Provide training and teaching on missions and evangelism
  • Preach twice a year (or more) in English service


Leadership

  • Work with Youth Ministry Deacon to oversee a volunteer youth staff and youth ministry interns, as applicable
  • Refine youth ministry vision and coordinate overall ministries
  • Train and develop student leaders and volunteer youth workers for regular youth programs
  • Maintain relationships with local churches and youth ministers for joint events and programs
  • Develop new youth programs (as needed)


Administration

  • Oversee youth portion of WHCC website, prayer bulletin, and Meta bulletin on a weekly basis
  • Attend weekly English staff team, Pastoral Staff Meetings for accountability and overall church involvement
  • Report to Lead English Pastor, work with the Pastoral Staff Team to support general ministry needs, and update church council about youth ministry


Pastoral Care

  • Build relationships built on trust and care with students and their families
  • Recruit, disciple, equip and empower lay leaders, both parents and young adults


Miscellaneous

  • Oversee youth mission trips
  • Support youth summer camps
  • Conduct MS and HS retreats as needed

West Houston Chinese Church (WHCC) is a non-denominational evangelical Christian church with 800+ members, holding services in English, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese. We are a growing congregation and seek staff who want to use their talents and skills to help build the kingdom of God.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 3-5 years of children’s ministry experience required (preferably in a church setting).
  • Christian college or seminary degree preferred.
  • Collaborative team player who can work with a multicultural staff and environment.
  • Self-starter who can independently lead an entire ministry, its staff, and volunteers.
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks at the same time with strong organizational, people, and communications skills.

Responsibilities 

Leadership

  • Refine and cast children’s ministry vision to staff, teachers, and other ministries.
  • Disciple, train, and develop children’s ministry deacon, coordinators, and teachers.
  • Advocate for the children’s ministry to the Pastoral Staff Team.
  • Collaborate with other ministries to coordinate special program opportunities.
  • Update church council with children’s ministry events and decisions.
  • Remain current on trends, teaching methods, materials, promotional ideas, and other children’s ministry techniques.


Sunday School Program

  • Oversee the development and implementation of classes and execute curriculum efficiently.
  • Recruit and retain teachers for the Sunday children’s program.
  • Study and understand the spiritual and developmental needs of children.
  • Plan teacher’s retreat, appreciation, and annual teacher training events.


Children’s Special Programs 

  • Lead special children’s programs (Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Day performances, infant dedication).
  • Coordinate and provide resources for all children’s programs for churchwide events (prayer meetings, Good Friday program, church retreats, missions conference, Christmas evening service, etc.)
  • Develop new children’s programs as needed within our church and the greater community.


Caring Ministry

  • Meet with children and families as needed to help provide care, support, or guidance.
  • Care for children’s ministry leaders and volunteer workers.
  • Send regular updates on the ministry and prayer requests to teachers and parents.
  • Assist in educating adults about parenting and children’s issues.

The role of the Facilities Assistant is a full-time position that assists the Facilities Manager in the day-to-day upkeep, repair, and maintenance of the Church’s property and equipment.

Qualifications
  • Born-Again Christian preferred
  • H.S. degree or training in a technical field
  • Teamwork, teachable and open attitude
  • Bilingual Chinese and English preferred

Responsibilities 
  • Assist Facilities Manager to maintain the facilities of the church, including building, grounds, equipment, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Check and ensure that facilities are clean. Assist with the set up of meeting rooms: furniture, chairs, tables, projectors, easels, flip charts, white boards, etc.
  • Perform physical tasks and check facilities. Assist with routine maintenance and replacement of supplies.
  • Perform minor maintenance of pool vehicles such as filling up gasoline, oil, and fluids. Assist in maintenance of other vehicles as directed.
